The British love the sea, not surprising since the majority of them live less than an hour from the coast! Being a small island just off the coast of a not always friendly Europe has always given the sea a great importance. The coast of Britain has always been Britain’s first and last line of defence, its gateway to the rest of the world and the place most dear to the British heart.
From the cliffs at Dover to the sands at Blackpool and days out to Brighton most people in Britain have memories of holidays by the sea; buckets and spades, piers, windswept and rain drenched beaches, penny arcades and the obligatory “wish you were here” postcard home.
Some of Britain’s most historic towns and cities lie on or close to the coast.
The coast of Britain is also a home to many of Britain’s artists who draw inspiration from the sea and its heritage. Many produce prints and cards of their work and this site will take you on a voyage around Britain’s coastline seen through their eyes.
If you are an artist producing greetings cards of Britain’s coast; fishing boats, harbours, groynes, beachscapes, coastal towns, ports or landscapes and would like to have a link from this site to yours absolutely free please contact me.
